About this audiobook
Frank R. Stockton
Frank R. Stockton (1834–1902) was an American novelist and short story writer who became popular during the late nineteenth century. Born in Philadelphia to religious parents, writing wasn’t viewed as a respectable or sustainable career. Despite objections, Stockton worked as a wood engraver before joining a local newspaper. He also worked at several magazines including Hearth and Home. Stockton became known for his children’s stories such as Ting-a-Ling Tales (1870) and The Floating Prince (1881). His most famous title, The Lady, or the Tiger?, is often the lead entry in his short story collections.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5We picked this up as a library discard--we were attracted to the artwork and the fact that it came with a "cd." Well, it ended up being a DVD in which the illustrator goes into great detail about the process of illustrating the book, which is the EXACT kind of thing Morgan is into! We LOVED the dvd, and Morgan seems to have really enjoyed the story, although I thought the story was just ok.
If anyone wants this book, I'd be happy to loan it out. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5By an American innovator of new fairy tales, this story of a man's search for his true self is engaging and witty. The illustrations are very fine.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A children's book for intelligent adults! Stockton wrote it more than one hundred years ago but it resonates in today's world. The bee-man is a contented person. At peace with his bees he 'walked among them, ate his meals, and went to sleep without the slightest fear of being stung.' Because a junior sorcerer declares that the Bee Man MUST have been magically transformed (why else would anyone want to live with bees?) a quest begins. Only after he discovers his 'previous self' can he be restored to it. Thereby hangs the tale! This lovely book is a welcome counterpoint to discussions of self-identity. It is a book not to be missed!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5An interesting tale of an old bee-man who goes out into the world to find his true nature. A nice mix of real life and fantasy, the book gets somewhat dark towards the second half as the characters talk to demons about getting their energy "toned up". The ending falls somewhat flat, but overall a neat read. Pretty good illustrations too.
