About this audiobook

Desperate to escape her dire situation, Nell Graves signs four years of her life away for an indenture in the colony of Maryland. Once she has served her time, she will have a chance at something few poor girls get: a completely fresh start. Unfortunately, the troubles in England haven’t left Maryland unscarred. In a province where men outnumber women six to one, Nell doesn’t think keeping her head down is an option. Matters only grow worse when she finds herself drawn to the worst man in the province for her to get involved with—extremely wealthy, very Catholic James Atwood. Caught in the middle of a possible freemen revolt and battling her own traitorous emotions, Nell worries her last refuge might be more dangerous than the civil war she left behind.

Jessica Dall

Jessica Dall finished her first novel at the age of fifteen and has been hooked on writing ever since. In the past few years, she has published a mix of historical fiction, fantasy, and romance novels--some including all three! In college, Jessica interned at a publishing house, where her “writing hobby” slowly turned into a variety of writing careers, including creative writing teacher and, her current job, content editor for a small press. When not busy editing or writing, Jessica enjoys crafting and piano, and spending time with her friends and family. She can most often be found at her home in Maryland with a notebook, her much-loved, sometimes-neglected husband, and toddler.

I enjoyed listening to this book having grown up in southern Maryland and visited st Mary’s city often. It’s still beautiful and rural. Much of the history intact. It took me a few chapters of hearing Calvert and realizing it was Calvert due to the accent as that’s not how we pronounce it. The author notes were distracting but I just skipped over them. I would have liked to hear them all at the end vs at the end of every chapter. I enjoy hearing more about the history but it did mess with the flow of the story.

I really liked the story itself but the authors notes at the end of every chapter were distracting and took away from the storyline.

Author's notes at the end of each chapter ruined this book for me. The actual story line was good but did note finish because of interruptions and explanations ?

Interesting historical story, though the author notes at the end of each chapter took a bit getting used to.
