About this audiobook
NOMINATED FOR THE RATHBONES FOLIO PRIZE
In the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado's engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing experience with a charismatic but volatile woman, this is a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Each chapter views the relationship through a different lens, as Machado holds events up to the light and examines them from distinct angles. She casts a critical eye over legal proceedings, fairy tales, Star Trek and Disney villains, as well as iconic works of film and fiction, infusing all with her characteristic wit, playfulness and openness to enquiry. The result is a powerful book that explodes our ideas about what a memoir can do and be.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Got lost in a few chapters, but overall I loved the book
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5wow i have literally no freaking words just wow ok?
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Raw vulnerability but brutal content. Heartbreaking to listen to. Sad what one human can inflict upon another ( and call it love)?
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It’s a very personal book so any criticism seems unfair and would be a person-judgement. I don’t want to do that. I liked the book and I think the subject of queer abuse is an important one to address. Not all chapters were equally interesting, in some i got lost. The beginning is very strong, and I appreciated the fact that the writer was telling when and where she wrote the specific chapters or parts of this book, as well as how difficult some issues were to verbalize.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Ok i think. Just not a fan of the book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/51. is this gonna be the book that gets me into memoirs??? i dont know why i assumed i didn't like memoirs (maybe it's just me underestimating my own intelligence as usual) but between this and heart berries... yea I'm definitely reading more memoirs. also, i want to read every single text (or piece of media) mentioned in this book
2. so many bookmarks i wanna buy the physical copy
3. 5/5 and probably a new all time favorite. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Um livro pesado, mas uma obra prima mesmo assim, leria de novo com certeza.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I’d give it 5 stars because the book even being about a very heavy subject is very fun to read/listen to. The only downside for it to be 4/5 stars here is because of the way it is read in the audiobook. The writer is the one who’s reading, which normally is a plus but not in this case. There’re pauses after each sentence and the tone of voice doesn’t chance so it gets a little annoying to hear. But again! Besides the narration the book is 5/5 and that’s the way I’m rating it in goodreads !
