About this audiobook
After years working in homicide, retired Toronto detective Steve Ryan reflects on six cases he will never forget.
Retired detective Steve Ryan worked in Toronto’s homicide squad for over a decade. For Ryan, the stories of Toronto’s most infamous crimes were more than just a headline read over morning coffee — they were his everyday life.
After investigating over one hundred homicides, Ryan can never forget the tragedies and the victims, even after his retirement from the police force. In The Ghosts That Haunt Me, he reflects on six of the many cases that greatly impacted him — seven people whose lives were senselessly taken — and that he still thinks about nearly every day. While the stories are hard to tell for Ryan, they were harder to live through. Yet somewhere between the crimes and the heartache is a glimmer of hope that good eventually does prevail and that healing can come after grief.
Steve Ryan
STEVE RYAN began his career with the Toronto Police at the age of eighteen. After nearly thirty years of policing — most of which he spent working as a detective—Ryan retired and began a career with CP24 as a crime specialist. He lives in Toronto.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5An excellent read! If you’re interested in true crime stories, then this is for you.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5One of best books I've listed to in a long time. Please add more like this. Thanks!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A thoroughly satisfying book. Exceptionally written and narrated. If your can’t handle details of tragic murders, maybe pass on this one. It has indeed been somewhat sanitized for the reading public, but not by much. Being an American, who’s familiar with the American Criminal Justice system and militarized policing programs, I actually felt envious of the Canadians being served by such selfless law enforcement systems. Bravo to Steve. Keep being you, because you’re a special guy.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved it, thank you for sharing your experience. Canadian perspective is very much appreciated. Best of luck in your new career.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow! I wouldn't stop till I finished. A cruel reminder how unkind this world can be.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Interesting book , it was read good enough to keep you engaged, it also made me research the last case on my own . Therefore , if you are into this type of book you may dive into your own mini search to follow up on these cases.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Heart-wrenching stories but without unnecessary pathos. Very well balanced. Shows us how these professionals suffer indelible trauma from daily encounters with death, suffering and the question of evil. Good narrator too, though I never got used to his saying « tronno » for Toronto, lol. But I am used to British pronunciation…
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book was incredibly well written and Absolutely Heartbreaking. I feel for the author for the things he saw in his career as well as the victims of the cases he worked.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved it. Amazing book. Great narration. A bit creepy but so good!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent, honest, true and very relatable. A brutality honest piece by the author .
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5He took too long to get to the point.
Good narrator. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book follows an ex-homicide detective from Canada and while it is extremely interesting, it is also very sad. It's very clear throughout the writing that this detective is very deeply affected by the cases he's worked. While this makes the narrative somewhat sad to listen to, I think it brought a sense of respect for the victims of the cases he discusses. It's clear that he cares for the victims and their families. This book felt like a peek into what it's like to be a person who has to deal with such horrible things daily.
Also the audiobook narrator has a lovely voice. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The book was interesting from beginning to end. Enjoyable though out.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Written by the detective who was the real officer in charge. It was first hand
