- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This nineteenth century novel reflects the imperialist spirit of the time it was written, depicting 14th century Venice as being saved from Genoese invasion by a 16 year old English boy, son of a merchant based in the city. This hero, Francis Hammond, has many other adventures, getting out of tricky situations, commanding men and eventually winning the girl in true swashbuckling fashion. An entertaining read, and fairly well researched, despite the imperialist assumptions.
