Freightliner trials Class 18

FREIGHTLINER has become the second company to take a Class 18 hybrid shunter on trial, with No. 18006 arriving at Crewe Basford Hall on April 9.

The Clayton-built locomotive had departed from Wolverton Works the previous day to start what Rail Express understands to be a year-long assessment.

Initially unloaded alongside Freightliner’s maintenance depot, the shunter was noted in the adjacent marshalling yard a few days later, where it is expected to be used to marshal ballast trains in the virtual quarry and trip wagons to the track recycling centre.

Of the main line freight operators, only GB Railfreight has previously utilised a Class 18, its trial of No. 18001 at Whitemoor Yard having
