The wheel deal

There is something genuinely frightening about Simon T Lilley’s MGB GT. It’s not the looks, condition or performance but the age. The green and gold coupé is a special edition which was built to celebrate MG’s 50th anniversary. Since we all know the company is celebrating its centenary this year, it means the rubber-bumpered Bs are now approaching half a century old. To people who grew up thinking of them as modern, this comes as quite as a shock.

The exact age of the Jubilee edition isn’t quite that straightforward, however. As so often in the world of MGs, there was some fudging involved on the dates to fit the needs of the Marketing Department so the special edition arrived a year late. As the decals on the side of the car say 1925-1975, it was declared that the Jubilee would mark 50 years
