Many readers will never have known a time when the UFO phenomenon did not exist. But, as Hilary Evans noted on the 50th anniversary of the mystery: “UFOs are a creation of our time, and when their time came, they were born.”

The modern UFO myth was created in 1947, on but how he later said they had moved “like a saucer would if you skipped it across water”.
