Sheep’s wool mulch

Sally Phillips, founder of Chimney Sheep, makes chimney draft excluders using Herdwick wool sourced directly from farmers in Cumbria. Demand for the product tends to slow over summer, so to bridge the gap she developed a range of garden products made from the leftover felt. “We were using it in our own gardens and in our tree-planting sites,” says Sally of the wool mulch mats and smaller ‘shillies’ that can be used to top pots or beds, helping to deter slugs, protect the soil and eventually add nutrients to the soil as they decompose.
