Classic Motorcycle Mechanics

Feeling wired!

Over the last few weeks, in between work done around the house (I can’t work on motorbikes ALL the time!) I have managed to get the wheels on and aligned with two long, straight edges, footrest assemblies and other bits and bobs (Photo 1).

I now turn my attention to the complete electrical system and I have set up some temporary tables to give me some room to do this properly. Every item will be assessed and repaired as needed, to make sure I will have no problems in the future.

Generator

I removed the old cable sheath and plastic connector; there was no visual damage, so then I did a multimeter check and Insulation test using a Megger on the whole assembly. All was good. I was concerned that the crash-damaged cover was an indication that the generator had received a big enough knock to severely damage it, so I was pleased at the result. I replaced. It can be seen that even a perfectly good resistance test result (0.1 Ohm) can hide some nasties; compare the difference between the good one on the left and the old corroded one on the right.

Circlip Pliers
Circlip pliers – or as our colonial cousins insist on calling them, snap ring pliers – are far from exciting, and not even that often used on motorcycles. But all bikes have them and to remove and replace them you do need the correct tool for the job
