The theme park was created under the supervision of Goro Miyazaki, son of Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki. The Toyota APM Cat Bus design was developed by Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota’s Vision Design Division, with Goro Miyazaki. So far, five Cat Buses run along a 1.9km passage at the park. The Cat Bus has a top speed of 19km/h, and can fit up to six passengers on the fluffy seats, or accommodate a wheelchair with a quickly deployed ramp! The number plate has a hidden meaning when spoken in Japanese – ‘と’ is the hiragana character for ‘To’, while ‘10’ (tou) and ‘six’ (roku) are ‘to’ and ‘ro’, making… ‘Totoro’! You can also spot four mice peeking over the roof of the Cat Bus. Passengers receive a special memento with a Cat Bus illustration drawn by Hayao Miyazaki on the front, and a park map drawn by Goro Miyazaki on the back.
