A HUNTING friend, also an avid wildlife photographer, once said to me “Tony, when walking in the bush with a camera, I am looking to take a picture. When hunting, I am, simply put, part of that picture.” These words resonate with me – they also give rise to some thoughts about the pleasures of hunting on foot in the sometimes daunting but always magnificent outdoors.
In 2004 I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and remember well the guides saying, – slowly, slowly – good advice at an unaccustomedly high altitude. I believe this advice to be relevant in the hunting context too. Walking at a slow or modest pace gives the hunter the time and opportunity to ‘smell the roses’ among other things; time to enjoy the myriad of sights, sounds and
