The early 1960s were a time of growth in the hobby, highlighted by record-setting coinage production, new coins and compositions, and expansion of hobby-related entities, including the American Numismatic Association, which was searching for a national headquarters for its museum, library and monthly publication, The Numismatist. And in Iola, Wis., the now three-plus-years-old Coins magazine was boasting more pages, more color and new publishing facilities.
The April 1965 issue of Coins magazine reported of the frantic activity in the nation’s mints:
“The treasury department has released the final monthly report of Bureau of the Mint production for the calendar year 1964. This report reveals that total production of all coins for the year reached a figure of 5,575,831,582. This figure represents nearly a 50% increase in production over 1963, when production totals reached a then record 3,824,699,866 coins.
