“10,000 VOLTS”

STEVE BROWN: This record, to me, is quintessential classic Ace Frehley. It’s everything that Ace was, let’s say back in 1977 and 1978. The heyday of Kiss and what everything Ace is now. To me the song is a modern-day “Shock Me” — it incorporates every part and every element that all of us Kiss fans and Ace Frehley fans love about Ace. It’s got an upbeat, great groove. It’s kind of got a little bit of a “Firehouse” Kiss thing. Ace said it himself, “‘10,000 Volts’ is the new ‘Shock Me.’” The song has great guitar sounds and great vocals, and of course the lyrics that Ace and I came up with, “she hit me like 10,000 volts” — nothing epitomizes Ace Frehley more than the story of him getting electrocuted in the ’70s or him having an electrifying sound.

This song was written by myself, Ace and our co-writer, David Julian, who was integral in coming up with some of the key guitar parts that we used. Ace used his Les Paul on this song as usual, and I believe we used one of the Aurora guitar plug-ins for his guitar solo tone. I used my SBS VS200 on this, and David Julian played some guitars as well. I believe he used a Les Paul. PJ Farley is on bass guitar and Anton Fig on drums. Ace and I did all the vocals. I did all the high harmonies and low-octave vocals. Ace did some of the harmonies as well. Lyrically, it’s a song about the thrill of the chase. It’s got some gambling references, which is classic Ace. Ace and I had a lot of fun writing these lyrics, which talks about how when Ace met Lara for the first time she hit him like 10,000 volts.

“WALKIN' ON THE MOON”

“Walkin’ on the Moon” was the first song that Ace and I collaborated on for the new album. It’s very, very special because it’s certainly a true collaboration in the sense that I brought in the original idea, which was very much influenced by Jimmy Page. It’s got a Led Zeppelin thing, and I knew Ace would love it. It had a great hook and the line “walking on the moon” somewhere, but it wasn’t the title of the song, and it certainly wasn’t the hook. That
