Pillow talk

Uganda is most well-known for its gorilla trekking, however this underrated destination has much more to offer. From white-water rafting at the source of the Nile to climbing the peaks of the Rwenzoris, from game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park to gazing through the mist into Murchison's Falls, the country has an impressive diversity of attractions.

If I am to send clients anywhere, I need first-hand knowledge of the accommodation options available, in order to recommend the most-appropriate places to book them into. And my recent tour of Uganda revealed an interesting, diverse range of options. Until recently the country wasn't known for the kind of luxurious lodges that Kenya and Tanzania boast, but a few truly exceptional properties have been developed.

Surprisingly, though, unlike Kenya, where you can fly directly into the national parks, the airstrips here tend to be a couple of hours’ drive from the popular tourism sites — so, should you decide to use domestic flights, you need to organise a guide to meet you at the airstrip and drive you to camp

Of course, there are many more options available, and this overview is designed to offer only a sample of the accommodation now available in Uganda, based primarily on the facilities I visited. It is not definitive, nor are they ranked in any way, but it may stimulate your own research.

01 JINJA

Uganda's adrenaline playground, Jinja is on the shores of Lake Victoria, at the source of the River Nile. Activities include white-water rafting, kayaking, tubing, river surfing, bungee jumping, river cruises and birdwatching.

• For the full luxury experience, head for . On a finger of land reaching out into the white waters, the ten cottages have verandahs on stilts at the water's edge, indulgences like plunge pools
