t's like clockwork. Right on the hour, the big birds start falling from the sky. You can hear the rush as they sweep low over the treetops on the final approach, wings spread for landing, then the cackling and hissing as they hit the ground and bound towards the carnage. Within seconds there are 30 squabbling for the spoils. Soon this rises to 50. Most are white-backed vultures — big, biscuit-coloured birds with naked reptilian faces. Among them are a few smaller hooded vultures.
