NOW WHAT?

Q How can I find a record of a stillbirth in New York?

A As with other vital records in New York, the answer depends on whether the event occurred. Different counties adopted record-keeping at different times, and New York City has kept its vital records separate altogether. And stillbirths are recorded differently than other kinds of vital events.

The New York State Department of Health> issues two kinds of certificates related to stillbirths. Fetal death certificates ($30 fee) are the official record of both birth and death; a birth certificate is not given. Only the mother can request this certificate.
