Q I have broken one of the guides on my favourite beachcaster. Is it worth paying a rod builder or shop to fix it for me, or is it something I can do myself?

CK says: I think the rod builders would be grateful for the work. Many do a very professional job, similar or identical to a factory finish when applying a new guide (ring). It depends how much it is as to whether it would be economical to do it yourself.
You’ll need to whip and varnish the new guide. I have done it myself in the past, and it doesn’t look perfect, but the fish don’t care and it works! My advice is to check with a shop or builder and work out the exact cost.
