eff Nadler, who photographed this porky, calls him a “tree cutie,”—of the prickly rodents that will make your heart melt. Yes, porcupines have thousands of loosely attached quills that will barb into predators if they’re attacked, but what most folks don’t know is that are incredibly vocal creatures. Nadler says he was in the woods near Great Sacandaga Lake when he heard what he thought were the high-pitched cries and whines of babies. Not sure what to expect, he came across two porcupines mid-altercation. They also groan, cough, chatter and grunt.
