At the age of just 18, Tony Greig made his debut into first-class cricket by being chosen for the Border Currie Cup side. A year later, Sussex in the UK offered him a trial, which if successful would result in him leaving his birthplace, Queenstown.
Many former Sussex players had been appointed to coach the cricket team at Queen’s College during his school days. These included Jack Oates, Alan Oakman, Ian Thomson, Ron Bell, Richard Langridge and Mike Buss. A strong connection between the Sussex County Cricket Club and Queens College had been formed over the years.
All of them noticed young Tony’s developing abilities, which included his selection for the Border Nuffield Side, an annual provincial schools tournament.
