USA return to winning ways

Lindsay Horan angered many followers of the US women’s team she captains when she said, earlier this year, that: “American soccer fans, most of them aren’t smart. They don’t know the game. They don’t understand.”

The remarks were understandably resented and she apologised, but it was timely nonetheless that it was the Lyon midfielder who rose at the back post to head in what proved the only goal of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup final.

While the US are used to winning CONCACAF events – this was their tenth success in 11 attempts (including the CONCACAF W Championship) – this triumph meant more than most.
