TOP-UPS: luxury or necessity?

I WAS interested to read on the internet recently that some well-known fanciers are providing their chicks with an additional, crop-fed “top-up” of hand-rearing formula, when perhaps others would consider the chick well fed.

Over several winters when I have bred across the New Year, I have found that some parents have fed poorly, or have stopped feeding completely once their babies have grown to a certain size, but have not quite left the nest-box. From
