AID workers in Gaza are used to operating in extremes – extreme conditions, extreme danger, extreme fear.
Getting food to people living on the brink of starvation always comes with risk, which is why the three-car convoy that recently set off along the coast to deliver supplies to a warehouse in central Gaza took all the precautions.
They went through the security checks. They made contact with the Israeli Defence Force (IDF), informing them of the mission. The roofs of their vehicles were marked with WCK, which stands for World Central Kitchen, an NGO that provides food relief. Two of the vehicles were armoured, everyone was wearing bulletproof vests.
But in the end it made little difference.
