Considered one of the easiest shrubs to grow, weigela doesn’t disappoint! It can grow in clay soil, it’s deer resistant, and hummingbirds love its bright tubular flowers. This versatile shrub is a gem.

Although older weigelas can grow up to 8 feet tall, there are plenty of newer small cultivars just waiting to catch your eye too. Left alone or with a bit of shaping, cultivars that grow more than 5 feet tall, such as ‘Java Red’ at right, make attractive informal screens or hedges. Get form and structure in the middle of the border with a medium-sized weigela—try cultivars of the Sonic Bloom series, which grow 4 to 5 feet tall in different below, fill in along the front edges of a bed.
