LAST SUMMER, The New Yorker ran an essay titled “The Case Against Travel.” The writer, Agnes Callard, expressed some fair viewpoints about touristy activities, like the underwhelming impact of over-hyped attractions (the Mona Lisa comes to mind). Callard’s best line: “Tourism is what we call travelling when other people are doing it.”
