Though less well known than other East African writers of his generation, Meja Mwangi's talent has been a key part of the literary history of the region. His novels are among the earliest books to feature the stories of urban Nairobi. , first published in 1979, tells the story of Dusman Gonzaga, a young man employed by the Nairobi City Council as a meter reader. is a deeply hilarious book. One of the most amusing moments occurs when Gonzaga attempts to rally the building's occupants against their landlord, Tumbo, who has let their home descend into squalor. Gonzaga isa riveting narrator, and through his eyes we see a picture of post-independence Nairobi.
