Are Lawns “Green”?

In some circles, the idea of a lawn is demonized. Maintaining a lawn may be offensive to some, from an environmental point of view, while to others it is an essential part of a beautiful home landscape. It can be environmentally beneficial, too. The American Turf Institute has determined that a lawn on a 50 ft X 140 ft lot produces enough oxygen in a year for a family of four. The lots of most new homes are much smaller than that today, but the point is made.

The truth is, a lawn is made up of a tightly knit network of grass plants. In one pound of average blend grass seed there are about a quarter of a million seeds. One pound or 0.4 kilograms of seed is needed to sow a new lawn on one metre of soil.

We agree that a) the lawn can be an environmental pig and b) you can maintain a lawn and be environmentally responsible.
