As drugs get stronger, the future of queer nightlife needs to be harm reduction informed

When Reece* first started falling in love with his now-partner over six years ago, he had never really taken drugs recreationally, apart from drinking alcohol and dabbling in weed on occasion – “the diet coke of drugs”. He even turned his nose up at the idea, having been taught throughout his school years that sniffing a line of cocaine, or taking an ecstasy pill, would lead to an endless spiral of addiction. But after moving to London, he began integrating himself in the capital’s dynamic nightlife and LGBTQIA+ party scene. Under flashing lights, heady sessions at FOLD, Adonis and Riposte saw him connect with other gay men and queer folk on dancefloors, soundtracked by thudding techno. And with that came trying party drugs for the first time, which he discovered did not match those doomed expectations.

“It was just an unspeakable idea that anyone would do drugs, the implication being that if you did them, you’d end up dead,” Reece recalls. “I’ve had such amazing experiences on drugs,
