Secrets of success

HAZEL'S FAVOURITE MATERIALS

Acrylics I love a heavy-body acrylic paint so Cryla is a favourite, or alternatively Atelier Interactive, which has a slower drying time and is wonderfully thick. Again, it is surprisingly good value and gives you more time to blend colours before they dry.

Brushes I recently started using Rosemary & Co bristle brushes, which are super quality and surprisingly good value, and handmade in the UK. For rough and ready work, where I’m just building up textures, I use anything from Daler-Rowney’s Graduate range.

Surface I have no special preference for a surface, although I particularly enjoy using a second-hand canvas for those lovely arbitrary textures!

At 14-years-old I was given a set of acrylic paints for Christmas. Like most people I came from Planet Watercolour, so it took me a while to work out how to use them and, to begin with, my paintings looked like a strange cross between an overworked
