Voices: Why don’t the English get a day off for St George’s Day? We don’t deserve it

I’m a bit jealous of the Irish. They get a day off for St Patrick’s Day, a public holiday in honour of their patron saint. But we don’t get one for St George’s Day in England. There’s a petition with almost 70,000 signatures calling for it. The problem is, a national holiday won’t restore the pride of people struggling to stay warm and fed.
