IS THE COCKAPOO the most popular dog in Britain? It certainly seems so where I live. I see far more of these curly-coated dogs than I do French bulldogs, a breed that recently topped the Kennel Club’s (KC) popularity stakes. Cockapoos are, of course, crossbreeds and as such they cannot be registered, so no one really knows how many there are.
Most of the breeds we recognise today evolved in the 19th century, while the 20th century was the era of the pedigree dog when established breeds were selectively inbred to establish their type.has proved to be an ongoing disaster, and many of the hereditary diseases we struggle with today are due to this 20th-century enthusiasm for breed purity.
