A stain on its character

Q My favourite and rather old tweed cap has a bloodstain on it from pigeon shooting. This is the first time it has ever happened. What is the best way to clean it without damaging or shrinking it? Any advice would be appreciated, as I am not keen to have it dry-cleaned.

If the stain is just a blood crust, one should be able to remove it with a bristled hat or clothes brush. Otherwise, sponge the area with lukewarm water using a soft cloth. Only dampen the stained area
