Pretty much ever since the biennial contest between the best male golfers on either side of the Atlantic become legitimately competitive, “it’s never too early to talk about the next Ryder Cup” has been a running gag in media centres across what used to be called the European Tour.
So, take it from me, this column will hardly be the first piece to comment on the 2025 contest at Bethpage Black on Long Island.
Which is fair enough. Almost to 11 to be exact – at Marco Simone last September/October, the European Ryder Cup machine clicked into gear. The same cannot be said of the Americans though. At first glance, at least some of the deficiencies so apparent during the 2023 matches don’t seem to have been rectified.
