Q Why do some seeds need soaking?

A Seed soaking is a way of breaking down the hard outer coating that inhibits germination in some seeds. Seed from plants in the pea family, such as broad beans, lupins and robinia have such a coating. Soaking the seeds overnight will usually break this down and remove any problems with dormancy. The seeds should be sown as soon as they have been removed from the water. Instructions on the back of the packet should tell you whether soaking is necessary.
