Misusing AI is ‘cheating’

experts warn

EDUCATION experts warned this week that the unauthorised use of artificial intelligence (AI) by university students for academic work constituted “cheating”.

The misuse of this innovative technology is subsequent to serious repercussions – such as plagiarism – if a student is caught, said experts.

University of KwaZulu-Natal academic Labby Ramrathan said that AI needed to be used responsibly.

“How the technology is used, is what matters. If students use AI tools to do their assignment then it does not contribute to any learning. In fact, most academics would be able to easily identify the work of AI tools in assignments. Hence, students would
