The editorial meeting is a bit like an AA meeting: we petrolheads are still struggling a bit with withdrawal problems. We find it hard to accept that a Lotus doesn’t handle much better than the rest. By all rights it should, but that’s just what we’ve been conditioned to believe.

Maybe everyone apparently wants to say goodbye to the old, beloved Lotus in their own way. We know that times are different. But secretly, as an enthusiast, you still hope that the Eletre SUV is special. It owes that to its brand, even if its mission is that of moneymaker. So we brainstorm on the perfect comparison for the Lotus, which is a somewhat more emotional discussion than would normally happen for a test between two electric vehicles.

It initially diverges in all directions: ‘Why don’t we serve the Lotus up to the Lamborghini Urus?’, one wonders. ‘No comparison!’ cries the other, ‘because it’s way more expensive and, besides, it has a twin-turbo V8. Apples and oranges!’

Both exceed 440kW, however, and both super-SUVs have a similar appearance: each appearing to be a modern interpretation
