MASCALZONE

This issue we take a trip to Newcastle-upon-Tyne to celebrate Mascalzonereader Maureen Kesteven. She cites this small, friendly place as her favourite eatery in the city, with high-quality food at a good price. It’s run by husband-and-wife team Iain Carmichael and Sabina Loddo. “Iain’s dishes offer traditional Italian food but with a touch of Scotland,” says Maureen. “For example, after a visit to family in the Outer Hebrides, a delicious pasta with Scottish venison ragù appeared on the menu.” Sabina’s Sardinian roots are evident here too – and when her mother visits from Sardinia, the menu includes her handmade pasta, Malloreddus della Nonna.
