My father, Sam Southworth, carried a pocket-sized New Testament with him throughout his service in the Canadian Army in WWII. He gave it to me when I was a teenager, and first interested in family history.

The New Testament had been given to Sam by his father, my grandfather, Edwin Southworth.

Ted, as he was known, had received it from his fiancée/ wife, my grandmother Gladys Wilmot Andrew. Ted carried it with him throughout his service in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in WWI. Though both were injured, my grandfather and father returned home and had families.

After my father died, I gave the New Testament to my nephew, who was scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan in 2002 with the US Air Force. I thought that was what Dad would have done if he were still alive. I do not regret my
