Uncrowned: royal heirs who didn’t take the throne

The history books are full of tales of the tragedies and triumphs of England’s kings and queens, with names such as William the Conqueror, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I known to generations of schoolchildren. But what about those who were in line for the throne but were never crowned, for whatever reason? In Uncrowned, we explore their stories, from the Norman Conquest through to the present day.

Although comparatively few of us can claim royal descent, particularly down legitimate family lines, taking a look at how the line of succession has rolled out over the centuries is fascinating for those who construct our own family
