MY GARDEN OF PLENTY

THERE isn’t a lot you can do with R350 these days. You’re lucky if it gets you a bag of groceries. Yet this small amount was all Nicky Jafta had when he lost his job during the Covid-19 pandemic and had to rely on the social grant.

But with his green fingers and a lot of blood, sweat and tears he managed to use this paltry monthly sum to start a small vegetable garden that not only put food on the table but has eventually become a thriving business.

His garden produces more than he and his wife Lynette (both 60) could ever eat, so he’s been selling his produce since last year – and because his prices are much lower than anything
