Michigan school shooter’s mother was convicted over son’s murders. Now his father is also going on trial

Both Ethan Crumbley and his mother were convicted after the 15-year-old murdered four and injured seven others in the Oxford High School shooting in suburban Detroit on 30 November 2021 — can his father escape the same fate?

Jennifer Crumbley was found guilty of manslaughter in February, just two months after her son was convicted and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

Now, James Crumbley is on trial.

The parents, the first in US history to be charged and tried for their alleged role in a mass school shooting, are being tried separately, giving the defence an opportunity to make a different case for Mr Crumbley.

Throughout his wife’s trial, her defence team pointed to James Crumbley’s love of guns and familiarity with firearms. He took his 15-year-old to a gun store and bought him a weapon, evidence revealed. Whether he be held accountable for his son’s actions remains to be seen.

His trial begins on 5 March.
