For the love of Hubert
FEATURED LETTER

I subscribed to AUSTRALIAN GEOGRAPHIC magazine to read the article about Sir Hubert Wilkins (see Australia’s unsung hero, AG 178). I read all the other articles and was surprised at just how much I don’t know about our environment.
It’s wonderful that this magazine brings our attention to the brilliant work so many dedicated people are doing to understand and protect our fragile ecosystem. I look forward to reading more interesting stories.

HONOURING HUBERT
It is a great shame that so many important Australians of the past are largely forgotten. Ross and Keith Smith are two more who spring to mind.
In (AG 178) is the (reprinted by The Friends of the State Library of South Australia), writes, “On 4 June 1928 George Hubert Wilkins was knighted by King George V ‘for fifteen years of consecutive work in the interest of science and national service’. Because he shared the King’s name, out of respect, he asked to be knighted as Sir Hubert rather than Sir George and was known as Sir Hubert Wilkins thereafter.”
