Why do HANGOVERS get exponentially WORSE WITH AGE? —JOHN MICHAEL

mailbag, Fit at Any Age edition of Ask the EIC, wherein you guys ask me a whole bunch of questions and I do my best to answer without using the words “it depends.” We’ll start, of course, with John’s hangovers, since we’re closing this issue in the middle of Dry (Damp?) January and John probably isn’t one of they feel when they wake up every day. We can blame the hellish mid-and-late-life hangover on our metabolism. As we age, our livers get worse at processing ethanol, meaning the toxins found in alcohol hang around our systems longer than they used to and wreak even more havoc on our sleep, blood sugar, and hydration. Hence the three-day hangover and the nagging question: Did I really need that last drink?
