Profits face a sobering reality

The global shift towards drinking spirits has been a boon for mega-distillery Diageo, the multinational based in London. In Australia, however, we are ditching the party lifestyle. Alcohol consumption peaked in the mid-1970s at around 13 litres of pure alcohol per capita a year, but it has steadily declined since then to around 9.3 litres in 2023, an all-time low.

Opinions will differ on whether this is a good or bad thing, but sober observers can at least agree that it's a thing. And it hasn't made a hoot of difference to Australia's liquor behemoth Endeavour Group.
