While editing the homes selection for this Before & After issue, we spent hours immersed in some really clever and enormously inviting renovations and interior makeovers. What we saw was a whole new movement away from contrived spaces and slick minimalism, toward a more eclectic and layered interior vibe. So, while Australians remain obsessed with the joy of renovation and transformation, surprisingly, it is vintage pieces, op-shop finds and inherited or heirloom furniture that is re-emerging as the surprise trend in interiors. A celebration of mish-mash, wabi-sabi and layered eclectica, it’s heading straight into our hearts in a blast of nostalgia, craftsmanship and affordability. Here, three of our favourite interior experts share their strategies for mixing old and new in their work – and homes.
