In early January, the discovery of a secret tunnel being dug in the historic Chabad-Lubavitch world headquarters synagogue in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, triggered a major brawl between officers of the NewYork Police Department and orthodox Jewish students attempting to defend the tunnel. According to Motti Seligson, a spokesman for Chabad, a “group of extremist students” had covertly dug a tunnel under a row of office buildings and lecture halls to connect the synagogue to a nearby vacant building.
