What is a steam tractor? Well the best way to describe it is as a one-man road locomotive, which is light, nimble, has plenty of power and, in most cases, has a compound cylinder block, a solid flywheel, compensating gear with springs, two or three speeds, belly tanks and a winch drum. They are used mostly for road haulage but they also need good off-road capability for winching tree trunks out of the woods and so forth. Some were even adapted for direct ploughing in the early days, but were too heavy and did not have enough traction.
