History shows that women lay claim to being the first to have a wristwatch made for them in the 1800s. In the early days, this took the form of a bangle or a piece of jewellery that was worn on the wrist. The first ‘modern’ version of the wristwatch for men did not come along until 1904, when Louis Cartier designed and made one for his friend, the keen amateur aviator, Alberto Santos-Dumont.
