The inspiration for a double-crossing of Australia — riding only on dirt roads — was born from childhood dreams and a deep bucket list desire to travel the outback of Australia. I was born in Longreach, western Queensland, so the bush to me is home. Although, truth be told, the city is now actually home, but the bush is where my heart is.
I have supported and competed in the Australian Safari in years gone by, so I had a realistic idea of what was doable. With a bit of endeavour, I could take the time to plan out a route that was a real adventure.
And anything or anywhere I wasn’t sure about, I could ask my old mate, off-road legend and former owner of Dalby Moto, Craig Hartley. I reckon Craig invented adventure riding.
You see, I didn’t really care too much about what road conditions would be like as that would be taken as it came, and I knew this kind of ride was not going to be a stroll in the park. But I did have a couple of thoughts right away, specifically:
