The great Spanish soprano Victoria de los Ángeles (1923-2005) rivalled the likes of Maria Callas and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf as one of the 20th century’s most treasured female voices. So the release of Victoria is cause for celebration. The 59-CD box draws together recordings made between 1948 and 1977, and spans complete operas, arias and a rich treasury of song. You’ll find some of de los Ángeles’s most celebrated roles within, such as Puccini’s Madam Butterfly and Mimì (), Massenet’s Manon, Gounod’s Marguerite () and Bizet’s Carmen. Rarities, meanwhile, include a first CD appearance for a 1964 song recital with pianist Gerald Moore at the Royal Festival Hall.
